  • Handeling big scenes in Vray?

Hey guys i was wondering how you guys are handling big scene (Scale wise). i am currently working on a really big scene and my vrayscene files are taking much longer than usual, i come from a max environment so i respect in making scene to scale, but this one scene i am working on is really big, currently all i have is a train and a sphere light. But i am having to crank my radius to about 2000 to get any noticeable light. Any advice would be great thanks!

The intensity of the sphere light by default falls off with the square of the distance to the light; if it is too far away then you will have to make it really bright.

2 ways to handle this I think are both perfectly valid...

      1. Model your scene to real-world scale and set your values BIG. Lights will require many digits to be visible
      2. Model your scene to relative scale. Meaning, make a Max/Maya unit = a foot, or a meter, or in large scenes, a decimeter seems like a good balance. Your light values will be lower, since your arbitrary scale is smaller than real-world.

      2. becomes necessary in maya since maya prefers cm. So we often just consider a cm to be = to a foot in large scenes.

Hey guys thanks, i was trying to figure out why my vray scene generation were taking longer than usual, and i think its because i am referencing references with rigs in the ( which is not a good idea), so i stripped everything out and got it to generate quicker, working better now Thanks!
