  • HDRI - Remove super bright pixels in render

    Hi,

    I am using a domelight with an HDR image to light a scene. The sun in the HDR is really bright and in the render I get this really bright pixels.
    What is the best way to remove / limit these artifacts ?

    Check the Sub-pixel mapping option in the colour mapping. that should work.

      You could also set the clamp output in vray settings to 5 or something, or in Nuke clamp your hdr with the clamp node.

        with what settings would you clamp the HDR? I mean would you clamp to 0 and 1?

          clamping it at 0 and 1 essentially make it a low dynamic image. The problem is if your HDR is super hot, meaning the sun as way over 1... like around 50 and the rest of the image is in the 0-1 range. That difference between a superhot pixel and a normal pixel is what the AA is having a tough time blending between those high contrasting values. so clamping your HDR at 5 for example is still over the 0-1 range but not as hot and you might have a better time getting rid of those pixels with your current AA settings.

          also as mentioned subpixel mapping should help. what this does it that it clamps the image before it does the AA. for example if you set your clamp value to 3. Vray will clamp your highest values at 3 then to the AA. which gives you "incorrect brightness" but you'll have an easier time getting rid of the sparkles with out crazy high AA settings. But if you don't use subpixel and have clamping on.. Vray will just clamp your image at the set value after the AA.

          or that's the way I understand it to work.
