Batch render file naming convention...

I was just wondering where vray gets its file naming format from?

We're having some strange scenario's where images will be saved out as name#.ext instead of the preferred name.#.exr but can't find whats causing this. Does Vray inherit the maya software settings? Could there be anything over-riding this?
