  • Light edge aliasing 32bit workflow

    Does anyone know a good workflow to avoid the edges of lights looking aliased when you want to retain the full exposure range of 32bit images?

    I know that I can eliminate the aliased look of the reflected light edges by enabling Subpixel mapping and Clamped output. But this eliminates the exposure stops.

    Can the aliasing lights be anti-aliased in post somehow?
    What workflow do people use to deal with this?

    There's no way - as far as i know. You can clamp your HDR to avoid those edges, but i guess that's not what you want. You can do a bloom in post and that is what you DSLR's chip would do if it had to capture such an extreme contrast. Maybe someone knows it better, but i think you should be really happy to HAVE the possibility to clamp the image before antialiasing that vray provides

      Same problem I've been getting on some bits I'm doing at the moment, I've just cranked the sampler settings around as well (although I don't know if it's the correct method).

        The main problem comes from when I have glossy/chrome reflections in my scene. I usually render a separate pass with just those materials clamped and composite them in post.

        But my experience in post processing is limited to After Effects. Does anyone know a way to clamp the image in a compositing program like After Effects or Nuke(which I'm willing to invest in)?

          You won't get the nice AA results you expect when you clamp (or softclip) the image in post. There's no soft transition because of the very high contrasts between the pixels where the HDR reflection occurs. You have to clamp the values BEFORE antialiasing and that's what vrays clamp does.
