  • Physical camera and motion blur

    Hi,

can anyone confirm that the motion blur option in the render setting/Vray/Camera are disable if the camera has a Physical camera attribute on?

    Thanks,

      Hi,
Like the help say : http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/maya...ams_camera.htm
Camera option in render global : The parameters in this section are ignored, if you are rendering from a VRayPhysicalCamera.

So, if you use a VRayPhysicalCamera, the motion blur is disable in render global.

Well actually if you read the doc carefully, you will notice that the camera type and depth off field have this description, but not the motion blur section.

        And the page starts with:
"The camera rollout controls the way the scene geometry is projected onto the image. Note that if you use the VRayPhysicalCamera in your scene, most of the parameters in this section are ignored, with the exception of some of the motion blur parameters."

So how much of the parameters are ignored?

When using the physical camera, the ignored settings are: motion blur on/off, subdivs, duration, interval center, bias. Their values are taken from the physical camera instead. All the other settings are valid.

          Best regards,

            Thanks Vlado,

Any chance in the future to have an override for these options to work with the physical camera?
I usually get a better control and result with the option in the render setting/Vray/Camera.

            Thanks.

We are considering Motion Blur and DOF to be controlled from Render Settings roll-out, but it's still а future project.

                That would be really useful.

VRayPhysicalCamera also don't support motion blur's bias parameter, or am I wrong?

If you are trying to match a motion blur setting of duration of .5 and an interval center of 0, you can do that in Physical camera when set to movie camera and setting the Shutter Angle to 360, and a shutter offset of -90. (Depending on the build of V-Ray)

A good way to test is to just set 2 keyframes on a sphere using your "V-Ray Global method". Store a frame in buffer and then turn on Physical camera to set that.

Vlado, why aren't the defaults for motion blur set to a duration of .5 and interval center of 0? That's 180 degree shutter setting for matching film at 24fps. You would think that should be the default physical camera settings too.

There are so many default settings in V-Ray that are counter productive for use in Maya. For instance, default max subdivisions of 256 in the render globals are just silly. I think the default settings of V-Ray do more harm than good for newcomers learning V-Ray. When people come to me with problems, I mostly adjust the defaults that are causing problems with renders. Hehehe...

Thanks, I was actually thinking about bias not about interval center.
Also I've mistaken Maya forum with 3ds max forum (tricky search :/), although I assume my problem and solution are true for both forums.

I second this proposal! 256 is such a ridiculously high number that I didn't even think the value was refering to standard mesh subdivisions at all. And the dynamic memory limit at 500mb as default seems pretty low for most users. I guess that's to make sure laptop users can still render though...

The number 256 refers to subdivisions on a triangle edge; this roughly translates to 8 subdivision levels. V-Ray will not usually go that deep, depending on how far the object is (or at least that was the idea). It does seem that most users never need more than 2 or 3 subdivision levels though.

                          Best regards,

that makes a lot more sense now, thanks for clearing that up vlado!
