  • PTEX(Mari) and Geometry Changes

    Hello,

we are just testing out PTEX and I want to find out what are your experience with PTEX
regarding geometry changes. At the moment we do mostly use Mari, but my questions are more general...

What I found out so far is that I can import a PTEX file from Mari and still scale the model, move verteices around and so on...of course that works, it has been used on characters.

But if I change vertex positions and export the model again and load it in Mari the PTEX is messed up in the areas I changed anything (not talking about splitting polygons or so...just vertex pushing)

So how do you handle that? It's almost impossible in a big production to absolutely lock the
vertex position when texturing has started...of course I can do the changes later...but I would like to see the update in Mari for example to adjust the textures may be...

    Is that not possible?

Is there a way to transfer PTEX information from one mesh to another? (may be in mudbox or 3dcoat?)
Baking is not a solution, because too much quality would be lost.

And what about adding edgeloops or actually really change the topology, is that totally
impossible, or are there workflows to do that?
I mean new faces could be added at the end of the PTEX index and the tables could be updated. Technically it doesn't seem impossible to me.
May be areas with changes might loose information, but at least not the whole model/PTEX
    should be destroyed...

It might be better to ask either the PTex developers, the Mari developers or someone more knowledgeable about it I'm afraid my own experience in modeling is close to zero. In any case, for the moment it looks like the modeling packages can write PTex files, but have trouble reading them (or indeed doing anything else with them other than exporting).

    Best regards,
    Vlado
I only act like I know everything, Rogers.

Yes, I posted this on the Mari board and others...seems in general the experience with ptex outside Disney/Pixar and WETA is very limited overall...

I think you can use Houdini to bake out and transfer attributes from ptex to ptex but I haven't tried it. I am sure the big studios like Disney and Weta have loads of advanced tools for handling ptex beyond our wildest dreams. It would be nice if some of those tools were made available for the masses. It will just take some time to happen..
