  • Assigning hair mtl to maya hair/shave hair cut

    Hey,

How do I assign the vray hair shader to maya hair/shave haircut?

Is it totally compatable with shave haircut?

    Cheers,

    Nick D

I'll have to ask Joe Alter about that... I believe by default it uses its own shader.

    Best regards,

This is what I got as a reply: "I believe we support that now for vray - you would just assign the shader to the shave display hair node, you'd also have to uncheck the 'shader override' checkbox on the node."

I'm not entirely certain that the hair shader will work right away though - I have to check.

      Best regards,
      Vlado

        Hey,

Yeah, works fine, just needed to uncheck the shader override.

I've noticed the max version has options for cacheing/simplifying gi. How helpful are these, and are there any plans for these to reach maya?

        Cheers,

        Nick

Are you setting your shave globals to use Hair Primitives or Geometry when using the vray hair2/3 shaders?

          EDIT:

Hah, just read your username, Nick Deboar? Its Martin from aardman, how's it going?

            Hi Guys,

when trying out shave 6.0v42 and nightly (vray_adv_21001_maya2010_x64_18979) using just the shave buffer and vray GI, I am getting severe artifacts and massive render time increase (despite modest DMC settings). Would this be a Joe Alter issue or a Chaos one (for submission). First image is without GI, second is with (brute force... cancelled the render @ 32 mins!). Previously working (but NDA) scenes with furry animal are showing the same artifact as well... I am stumped.

:edit: I guess this is a starting point... // Warning: Unsupported texture shaveVertexShader //.
:edit: Third images is the old vray dirt -> ambient light (environment occ.), without any GI. Equally kooky results.
:edit: Tested in the 20004 release build (original retail), same results. So contact Joe?

Are we obligated to use only the vray hair shader with shave? Would be great to use shave vertex shader with GI as well. Failing that, is there a way to pass root/tip values out of shave into a Ramp texture to use with the vray hair shader?

I wonder if someone would be so kind as to give me a step by step on this, I cant seem to make it work?

Still not working for me, which overide on which node?, I think I have tried everything, I also downloaded DRDardis scene and didnt have any problem rendering it out both with and without GI though the GIwas crawlingly slow, only thing was that (on my machine) DrDardise's. scene renders as shave hair not vrayHair using 6.0v45 and Maya 2012 SAP sp1 so after spending a lot of time on this Im inclined to think it doesnt work.

With Vray 2.2 you can use this workflow to assign the vrayMtlHair to Shave:
                      1) select the hair and right-click > assign material > vrayMtlHair3
                      2) uncheck "override geom shader" on the shave node (located at the bottom of the material properties section)
                      3) in the Shave globals set the render mode to "geometry"

Only problem is: I can't get it to read any texture maps.

Thanks for the info Sharktacos I was expecting some way into the shave native shader without rendering it as geo I suppose. I'll keep picking away at it
                          cheers
