auto generate object or material ID script?

Does anyone know of a script that would automate assigning object or material IDs to a scene. Ideal would be if a user could define a range of numbers for a selection.
Surely this must exist, right? Anyone care to share the love?

It will generate objectID and materialID with an unique number and color (based from the name of the transform or the shape. With this, if you use the asset (the transform or shape) in another scene, it will be the same number and color)

It splits the colour spectrum up into as many parts as objects you have selected and then assigns each colour
