  • Fresnel from a specific direction?

I was watching a tutorial for 3dsmax, where they were adding dust to the top of a wooden desk. They were using a fresnel to control how the dust went on top, but they were able to tell it to only affect surfaces whose normals faced up in the Y direction. Is there a way to do this in Maya?

Yes, if you go to Create > V-Ray > Texture from V-Ray plugin, you will find a FalloffTex node that allows you to do that, although it might be a bit tricky to set up.

Great, thanks! One more question...I see that in 3dsMax there is a curve control for the falloff. Is there something like that in maya?

You could use a Ramp texture...
