  • Gamma correction for alpha

Is it necessary to apply a gamma correction node to alpha textures, along with the diffuse for a leaf shader?

    Thanks

    Probably not.

Hi Vlado, sorry for the bump but I want to search for answers before asking - but is it recommended to gamma correct translucency slot for 2SideMaterial?

It depends on how the texture is created and what you want to get out of it. If you want 50% grey RGB in the texture to be 50% translucency, then you don't need to gamma correct. I assume that usually this will be the case.

Thanks Vlado, to be more specific.

If I'm using the lazy approach of the "Linear Workflow" tickbox for the scene.

Does one have to then gammaCorrect the "Translucency Swatch" even if I'm using a plain colour?

I've tested and there's obviously a difference, I'm just not sure which is "correct"/

With plain colors, the correct thing is probably to leave it alone I mean that if I enter 50% translucency I would expect the material to let half the light through.

In general there's no need to get carried away with gamma corrections; f.e. I've seen people gamma-correct light sources, which is doesn't make any sense at all...

              Cheers, thanks again Vlado.

I think the confusion stems from Maya's own role in linear workflow...not V-Ray.
