  • Techniques for controlling Vray fur?

We have a project coming up soon that will require a good fur solution. At the moment, it is one of the area's we would still lean on Mental Ray or even PRman for. We'd like to have a Vray solution however. Has anyone here had much success with controlling Vray fur through custom grooming and dynamics systems? Or is it all about using Yeti/Shave?

It's pretty hard to find any production examples of fur rendered in Vray online, I'd love to know that this is just because it's overlooked.

Well I can say that vray fur is a quick/free solution for fur, but it does not claim to compete with shave/yeti and so I think it can't really compare in terms of flexibility to those more developed systems. I personally use vray fur for something that does not need much control, like grass in the background, or random fur. When it comes to dynamics, I don't think vray fur has much to offer (vlado could correct me here).

I think your next best solution would be maya fur/hair, which vray can also render, and so it will come with whatever maya dynamics can offer as well as maya styling (which in my opinion isn't great) but better then none.

Just a small correction - Maya Fur is not supported, because Autodesk doesn't provide API to access it.
