MAX number of DR computers?

Is there a maximum number of computers you can use in a distributed render? I've heard people say they thought 10 was the max but never got a confirmation.

Chaos Group products are licensed per machine and with one V-Ray for Maya license you can start and use V-Ray GUI and tools inside Maya platform, start one local render job, speed up rendering with up to 10 render slaves for Distributed rendering using V-Ray Standalone, speed up rendering with up to 10 render nodes using Maya batch.

in other words if you have 10 vray licenses on the network you should be able to run up to 100 dr machines, I succeeded with running some 28 machines with vray RT in cpu mode.

With one license of V-Ray for Maya, you get 10 render licenses which you can use for DR. If you buy more licenses, you can use more nodes for DR.

We have several licenses of V-Ray for Maya but we are experiencing that we almost never get more than 10 DR slaves that hop onto a DR render. Some machines simply stay idle and since we run the slave in a command line window, we can watch what's going on... which in that case is nothing, on the idle machines.

Any ideas why this may be?

Edit: the machine that is idle on one DR job may work on another DR job, so it doesn't have anything to do with firewalls etc.

Have you entered all IPs for the slaves in the settings?
Also make sure you've not limited the max number of slaves that a render will use.
This option is in the same dialog where you add the IPs (at the bottom).

Hi Teodor, I have no such option. I'm on Maya 2012 with various versions of V-Ray for Maya including nightly build 22430.

Yes, the issue is not to see how many connects ... but the fact that we never get - let's say - 20 machines, even if they are all running the slave and should be able to hop onto a DR job.

In that case, V-Ray should print in the log some info about that. If a connection to a machine fails, V-Ray will print this out. Do you see any such information? Also have you tried to specify the machines by IP and not by name?

That was it. For some reason some machines would not get resolved by hostname. Feels like I should tried that first before posting here, hehe... Thanks for pointing it out.
