  • LWF with SSS2

Using Vray 2_1 stable. Noticed there´s a "Linear workflow" checkbox under "Extra attributes" on the SSS2 shader(on by default). What´s it for?
Does this mean you don´t have to gamma correct the diffuse, subsurface, scatter colors etc. ?

It determines whether the fastsss2 material follows the global "linear workflow" option in the color mapping settings or if it should never apply any correction to the colors. In general though, I don't like the global "linear workflow" option I do not recommend using it - it's very inconsistent in that some things are corrected and some are not, and there is no easy way for you to know which ones are. Further on, it applies the correction on the entire result of a texture shading network, whereas the correct approach is to only apply it on the input data - File nodes or colors.

    Best regards,

So do you recommend unchecking the "LWF" on the SSS material, if I use the default linear workflow settings under colormapping (not the "LWF" checkbox), but gamma 2.2, don´t affect colors etc. ? Or does it only have an effect if if you use the global linear workflow button?

Interesting, is it possible to expand on this please Vlado? Does this mean it affect the actual shading model overall and also how light travels in the scene? Or do you mean it just affects shader inputs like refraction and or bump etc that are unwittingly get corrected? I'm really curious to what you specifically mean here.

I thought the only reason why Linear Workflow checkbox was not recommended is because it produces a slightly different curve between SRGB and 2.2 - not enough to notice when working in pure 3D but enough to notice when working with film, what you post is news to me and slightly worrying to me! :O

Is it possible to fix this at all or is it a planned feature?

Maya is a huge pain to gamma correct everything.

Hmm, I see in the latest nightly there is this message in the output:

Warning: The linear workflow is deprecated and will be removed."

I guess that answers my question.

Hehe ok then The results from that option are generally too unpredictable (like it affects some things, but not others, it affects the result of a texture graph rather than the input values and so on).

No problem - thanks for explaining it.

BTW if you guys really are going to remove Linear Workflow tickbox, is it possible to please add in a new VRayColor node like 3DS Max that can have gamma controls on it similar to how you've implemented gamma controls for file textures? That would be very handy.

I really dislike Maya's gamma nodes method at .455 - because Maya's viewport goes dark - I'm sure many others would also agree.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the viewport material just goes black then because it's ported from Max.

Yeah, that's annoying - I'd love for this to be fixed as well.

yeah I would appreciate it if the ogl preview of the diffuse color didn't get darker. I understand why it does but ogl would need to have 2.2 gamma applied to it as well. Is there a way to do this with the maya default hardware rendering? Also seeing as vray Materials don't work with Viewport 2.0.
