  • shave and haircut.

    Hi.
I found vray Dra File menu in shaveGlobals Tab.
Is it similar proxy? and How can I use this?

I use vray for maya recently nightly build on Linux.

It would be better to forward this question to Shave and Haircut developers they should know better what exactly this menu does.

I've done a bunch of work with this.

The .dra file is the hair data that gets written into the .vrscene on translation. As far as I know, that field is only used internally.

However, I've written a python script that allows me to generate .dra files without rendering the scene, and then link them into the .vrscene file.

It works just fine. I've got an early version on this other thread. Here. The code is in really embarrassing prototype state. I made a cleaner version to our Qube! submit script, but that's too specific to that environment.

      Hope this helps!

However, as far as I know, shave still isn't working properly with Hair3. There is an issue with curve normals flipping.

Hm, can you get me an example scene for this?

        Best regards,

          Here you go...

I made this for joe a month or two ago.

I was able to recreate the issue in a simple scene. I think it's 7.0.29, Maya 2012. It's not resolved in .32.

            Vlado,
is there anything that can be done for this on the VRAY side? We are *Trying* to use shave in production and I'm afraid that if we have to rely on Joe to fix this, it either won't get fixed or by the time it does get fixed it will be too late.

            *edit to add:
our problem is actually hairs that look like they are stretching back to reach the origin.... sort of like that one hair in your example that extends out to the left.
We've seen flipping normals when using instances for feathers on a terror bird, we noticed that it's a joe thing and not necessarily a VRAY hairmat problem. Seems that the shave hairs try to somehow align themselves to camera and flip when they reach a threshold. At least that's what it looks like. You can see it with thick hairs but with thin hairs it is not as noticeable. Not sure if the long hairs that stretch way out towards the origin is related or not.
