  • do HDRIs need gamna-correction?

Assuming I have a linear workfkow (colour mapping linear, gamma 2.2 in the colour mapping dropdown) and a V-ray physical camera, to light said scene with an HDRI+vray dome light setup, do I need to apply a "texture input gamma" attribute to my HDRI?

I have never done this previously, however I just read someone on CGtalk say that the HDR needs to be gamma corrected and set to sRGB. Confused. Do I need to gamma correct my HDR/EXR files for my dome light?

    Could someone clarify?

If the HDRIs are done properly, you do not need to gamma-correct them (unless you want to do that for artistic purposes).

In general, float images which are either 16 half or 32 full float, never need gamma correcting. As Vlado pointed out, if they are done correctly, typically a software that does proper linear output will handle that correctly.
