  • Deep (exr 2.0) comping with the "deep" channel

I have a render done with exr2.0 (deep) and am looking at it in Nuke, trying to re-create the workflow in this video from Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
In it they use a DeepCrop node based on looking at the location of objects (ie their distance from the camera) based on the "deep" channel.
However it seems that in my render the "deep" channel is not there. I do see other channels (rgb, alpha, depth, filter) but not the deep channel :P

Is there something I need to do in Vray with render elements or in the Render Settings to get it to out put this channel?

    thanks!

Let me clarify my question a bit...
The depth information is there in the file. I can thus just guess the numbers and successfully DeepCrop the image in Z. What I however would like to do is be able to sample the image with my mouse to see what exactly the depth value is so I know what value to type in. This is how the deep channel is used in the video.

So I figured it out (yay!)
      1) I needed to look at the deep channel in the alpha rather than in the RGB.
      2) I needed to lower the f-stop waaaaaaaay down to see it.

More practical is simply to set the second channels layer to "deep.front" (which puts this into the alpha) and then view the value below by hovering with the mouse cursor.

In short, the Vray output is just fine and this was more of a Nuke workflow question really.
Hopefully this will be useful to someone who is trying to figure out the same thing

Okay this is one odd thing (continuing this little conversation with myself here, LOL!)
I can only see the deep pixel info when I run the DeepRead through a DeepHoldout (inputting into the "main" channel of the holdout).
Any idea why that might be based on what Vray is outputting?

Here's an image that may help clarify the above:

As we're walking down the 'deep' path as well, thank you for your post. that's very helpful to find stumbling blocks before we stumble.

Yeah, I'm just stumbling around here

One way I found to get the deep info is to use the DeepSample node. If you reposition the little dot over the area you want to sample (by default at 0,0 in XY so it's hidden in the bottom left corner) you can get the deep info.

This is the only way I know to sample deep-information.
