  • scene unit scale on large assets

Does anyone have any thoughts on pros and cons for setting up scene scale in cm or real world scale when dealing with character animation and assets.

We are just about to start on a TV animation pilot and not sure if all the characters and the village they live in should be real world scale ie 1.5 m tall for the kid characters.

The village at this large scale does give some errors:
// Warning: Scene bounding box is too large, possible raycast errors. // but the render seems fine.

Would be good to hear from those who have worked on TV production if large scale units causes any issues.
We are rendering in GI no no linear workflow.

    Thanks for any help

    Hi,

It is better to set the units according to the size of the scene. For an example, exterior scene - m's or km's, interior - cm's ...
    Hope this helps.

Regarding the error you get with your scene,
// Warning: Scene bounding box is too large, possible raycast errors. // but the render seems fine.
you can check this thread for solution:

1 scene unit = 10 cm (1 dm) is a very workable size for most scenes and should be able to handle scenes a few km in size while still being able to work with small objects.

For smaller non-km scale scenes with small details 1 unit = 1 cm works. For huge scenes 1 unit = 1 m. of course you could go as large or small as you want but those are the most used values.
