  • Understanding SSS flicker and how to fix it

    Hello,

So I am having a issue with flickering in SSS shaders. Now normally I will arbitrarily raise samples hit render and usually the problem goes away or is less apparent in final comp. Now that I have done that and the flickering is still there I am more interested in exactly knowing why this happening and so I can learn the most efficient way of fixing/avoiding this in the future.

The geo is being lit by 1 spot light with a hdr in the ENV slot and using on IR for primary GI engine and just camera animation. Uploaded is my vray settings, I also have a scene with the geo which can be sent if needed. I wonder If it is caused by the mesh not being closed, but any advice is appreciated.

    Heya

    General diagnostic workflow...
    1. Diagnose. Create RAW light/refl/refr/sss/etc/etc passes and see which pass is flickering.
    2. Disable GI - see if it flicker
    3. Try using SSS - raytraced - this should solve flicker.

Sorry should have included that it is in SSS pass. Setting mode to raytraced is not an option as it changes current look of shader, and jacks up rendertime.

You can try also the object based illumination map.
