  • running 2.45 and 3.0 at the same time?

    Hi,

We are running v2.45 with Maya 2014 via a network license server for production. I am thinking to bring my own v3.0 with dongle (single GUI license) to test out some new features with Maya 2015.

Is it possible to run both version on my workstation? If yes, how to configure the license setting so I can run v3.0 on Maya 2.15 when the license is already pointing to a network license server for the v2.45?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Yes, it is possible. You could choose between two options:
*) Update the current license server to version 3 and plug in the second dongle directly on it. The license server will detect both dongles and their licenses.
*) Install the V-Ray license sever (from the installation package ) on another machine, install Webu key drivers as well and plug in the dongle.
Then add the IP of this machine to the "Alternate license server" field of the " Change license server information" window on your workstation to get the 3.x license.

If you have any questions or difficulties with this procedure, feel free to ask here or send us an email to support@chaosgroup.com

      Hi,

With the two options, I am leaning toward the 2nd option to minimize the change to the license server and effect to the running pipeline.
Here below is what I am facing.

      1) The network license server is on box1 remotely. The license server's name is specified in the "Primary License server" slot of the V-Ray license server information of the local workstation (box2) I am using for running V-Ray 2.45. I am not sure if there is a dongle plugged into box1?

      2) Here on box2 (local workstation), I would like to plug in my own dongle which has V-Ray 3.0 license. Can I simply specify my workstation name in the "Alternate license server 1" slot of the V-Ray license server information window (the Primary license slot is already used for pointing to the remote license server for v2.45) so that I can use V-Ray 2.45 when Maya 2014 is running and V-Ray 3.0 when Maya 2015 is running?

      Thanks.

There should be a dongle attached to this machine. The dongle should be plugged in to the machine where the license server is running.

        2) Here on box2 (local workstation), I would like to plug in my own dongle which has V-Ray 3.0 license. Yes, all you need to do is to install the V-Ray License server & Webu key drivers on the Box2 machine and plug the dongle into a free USB slot (Box2). Then open the "Change license settings" panel and set localhost or 127.0.0.1 to the Alternate license server 1 field .
Make sure that the V-Ray License server is stated and running on Box2 machine in order to use the 3.0 license.

          Hi Tashko,

I have got the Vray 3.0 running on Maya 2015 (local license) alone with Vray 2.4 on Maya 2014 (network license) on Windows 7 x64.
However, I can't run 3.0 RT with CPU or GPU.

Normal render works correctly. When launch RT (CPU), the RT console window didn't pop up, and I received warning messages as below.

// Warning: line 1: [SettingsEXR] No image writer specified. //
// Warning: line 1: [SettingsPNG] No image writer specified. //
// Warning: line 1: [SettingsJPEG] No image writer specified. //
// Warning: line 1: [SettingsSGI] No image writer specified. //
// Warning: line 1: [SettingsTIFF] No image writer specified. //
// Warning: line 1: [SettingsTGA] No image writer specified. //
          // Warning: line 1: Render host box2 (127.0.0.1:20207) is not responding //

Deadline is installed as the render management software.

I have tried "Remove V-Ray render slave as a service" but RT still not working.

          Thanks.

            Hi,

            Thank you for the update.

Have you restarted the machine right after the "Remove V-Ray render slave as a service" was executed?

I did restarted the machine at some point, but not "right after".

The thing is there are two "Remove V-Ray render slave as a service"; one of Vray for Maya 2014 and another of Vray for maya 2015. Does it matter which one I turn off? Or should I turn off both and re-start right after?

              Thanks.

So I re-start right after I do the "Remove V-Ray render slave as a service" for Vray for Maya 2014 and Vray for Maya 2015.

With a sphere and Vray Rect light created in the scene:
In Maya, Vray RT CPU is working. Still no console window pops up though. Vray RT GPU is not working with the following error in the Maya output window.

In Maya 2015, Vray RT CPU is not working with the "Warning: Render host box2 (127.0.0.1:20207) is not responding".

I have worked in a company that used Deadline for render management before where the Vray console won't pop up during a RT CPU session. I am wondering if Deadline is affecting the RT running?

                Thanks.

                  Hi,

Deadline should not have any impact to the V-Ray RT renderings.
However, in case that the RT console window is still not visible, please open the Windows services and search for VrayMayaSpawner started.

There should be at least one, which you have to stop.

Thank you, Tashko. I was able to launch RT CPU and GPU with the console window shown up after stopping the VrayMayaSpawner in the services.

Do I need to turn the service on if this box will be used as a render slave after I got off work?

If your plan is to use this machine for RT GPU rendering then make sure that the render slave is not set as a Windows service. This limitation is not caused by V-Ray.
