  • Xgen and Vray Proxy?

    Hi,
    'm aware is this tut

    but I have a question.
Is it xgen archives as efficient as v-ray meshes?

Is it possible to use *.vrmesh as an archive file for xgen?

    Thanks

    Hi,

They should be equally efficient during raytracing. XGen Archives are alembic (.abc) files.
We are planning for the far future to be able to export archives to .vrmesh-es but currently no work has been done for that.

If you really want to use a .vrmesh you can also export an XGen scene (with normal dummy xgen archives) to .vrscene and before rendering it with standalone you may edit it - you can replace the .abc files for xgen-related vray "GeomMeshFile" plugins with .vrmesh-es

Currently no progress on this. We will be looking into displacement and subdivision for SP2 (SP1 will be released soon).
What would you like your vrmesh workflow to be? The idea we had was to export a .vrmesh along with the .abc from the normal xgen archive export functionality and not from the Create/VRay/Create Proxy menu but I don't see what the benefit will be for users if we just switch to .vrmesh from .abc behind the scenes... The reason for this is that the exported archive has to be integrated with xgen properly so it can be visualized in the viewport and instanced and etc.

i would like to have proxy meshes for the viewport instaed of alembic files... think this could speed up the viewport...

Well the viewport can be sped up by:
            - lowering the percent of drawn primitives from the Preview/Output tab of the xgen window
            - exporting the archive with LOD and some very high percentages for the poly reduction and then enabling LOD in the Preview/Output tab of the xgen window and then tuning the Low distance and Medium distance from the Primitives tab of the xgen window.

Even if we support .vrmesh export and V-Ray render with it I don't think we will be able to draw in the viewport the vrmesh-es if instanced with xgen...
