  • Viewport textures

What is the trick to show texture files in Maya's viewport, I've recently upgrade to Maya 2016 and Vray 3.0 but the textures in the viewport display so badly,as bad as 2015 Vray 2.0 I did try to change to different viewport renders and different filter types for the texture and sometimes I got it to display correctly but then the texture display goes bad again, its really hard to work without looking at a nice displayed texture...please does anyone knows the problem?

Is that viewport 2.0 or the legacy one?

      Viewport textures

Hi Vlado, it's either one of the render choices, if I use Mental Ray its all nice, ideally I prefer to leave on viewport 2.0 because is the default and more advanced...but legacy has the same bad display of textures...actually If I just change to a maya shader you can see is sharp, both have same quadratic filter on it.

It seems that because I'm working on a scene done in Maya 2015 Vray 2.O and now in 2016 Vray 3.0 the texture displays badly in viewport 2.0 or in Legacy default ..but, if I open a new scene in 2016 and switch to legacy I can see a very good resolution of the texture, Is Vray 3.0 not compatible yet with viewport 2.0?

Autodesk is constantly changing the viewport 2.0 API, there is very little documentation and a lot of work for us. So we aren't really spending a lot of effort on it.

The issue is that we can't use textures in native resolution in VP 2.0. Maya allows us only to bake textures, and we use the "Bake resolution for unsupported texture types" option in the VP 2.0 settings. You must increase this option or use an env var (see the docs). Instead of extending this support, Autodesk decided to present another API, which will go through their native viewport system. The catch is - this API has no custom lights yet. So if we use it, all V-Ray lights will stop working. Not to mention, that we must still support also the legacy API for older Maya versions. So we decided to wait until the new API is cleatly finished and supports everything.

gooseneck: when texture alignment etc is important- there's another trick..

              1) Set the material to Lambert for the sake of viewport
              2) on the Lambert you can add a vrayMtlOverride which can now contain a V-Ray material for rendering instead.
              3) point the Vray diffuse to the same file as the lambert color to show changes.

so basically you end up with a VrayMtl with a lambert as a skin for the viewport. It works well.

It's a long standing frustration but not limited to Vray. Thank you for the explanation ivaylo.ivanov - it makes it less frustrating to know why.

Thank you all for the detailed information, yes its frustrating that still in 3.0 this basic function is not supported, specially in cases when an Art Director wants to take a peek at your scene in the viewport, I'll try to implement the suggestion given by rocoholmes or keep using legacy, unfortunately viewport 2.0 handles much better heavy scenes and I won't be able to use it.
Thanks Vlado as well and I know you guys are trying to resolve this API issues.

In your viewport, select Renderer>Viewport 2.0>options box. Under "bake resolution for unsupported texture types," set both values to your desired viewport texture resolution. Under "Maximum texture resolution clamping" turn on "clamp texture resolution" and set it to the same value. Click the "Reload All Textures" button, and your viewport should reload all textures at the desired resolution.
