  • Maya native water texture compatibility issues?

I'm looking for confirmation on if the Maya native water texture is incompatible with Vray and the VrayMtl.

I've attempted a simple setup with the Maya water texture driving the diffuse of a Vray Mtl and the results come are that of a procedural noise (doesn't follow any of the water specific texture attributes). Also the ripple attribute in the water texture has no affect on render output.

If someone could confirm that there is compatibility issues please do, so I can find another solution for what I'm trying to achieve. I might just be going crazy too.

    Many thanks,
    Clayton

Edit: Here's a photo of what I'm getting with the water texture pumped into the diffuse of the vrayMtl (viewport and attrEditor is what is expected. VFB is result)

I doubt it works, vray comes with its own water texture though thats not bad. Also you can use phoenix ocean texture which is free and it looks way better.

Kudos on pointing me to the phoenix water texture. I have a version of Phoenix so it was already installed. No ripple effect though which is sour! Maya water has a nice ripple effect (too lazy to animate a circular ramp to do this... lol. Only for previz work).

Will use the phoenix water texture though when I need it! Good to know. Thanks!

Well, you could use distance texture to create ripple effect based on geometry occlusion. Its a bit of work but it looks not too bad.

We have some code from Autodesk for the native textures, and it's probably not too hard now to render them as Maya do. Will add the water texture to the "to do" list.

Sounds great! Or better yet just add the missing functionality to your own water texture when you guys have the time (I know all of you are busy). I was just looking for the animated ripple functionality. Thanks again!

The "ocean" texture is called VrayWater. I think there are plans to include the phoenix one with the other textures, but I don't think that has happened yet. In the meantime you can load the phoenix water texture as a plugin (create>Vray>plugin).

from what ive seen the water texture and ocean texture work quite differently. ocean seems more physically accurate. am i mistaken?
I cant seem to get it to work from the plugin section, do i use 2d or 3d mapping?

Yes, the ocean texture was specifically created to simulate ocean waves, the other one is more basic. You need 3d mapping for the ocean texture.
