z-depth as seperate image file comes out black - no info - or white

We have been trying to render out z-depth files, but are only getting black images. We turned of 'auto clipping planes' and it went from black to white.
We are trying to render out as .png files. We set min and max distance in the attributes. Not sure why we don`t get in-between information. We are using the measuring tape to read distances for those settings.

if you right click on the vray frame buffer are you seeing any info? any numbers?

Is there a chance to send us the scene or a simplified version of it for investigation?
If you could replicate the issue on a very basic scene that would be even better for us.
