I like the look of the interactive groom tools in the new Maya 2017. I did some quick tests and noticed that the hairs do not seem to render in VRay. They are fine in Arnold and the old-style XGen.
XGen groomable splines actually render fine for me and I don't see a reason they shouldn't. Can you please check if you have V-Ray selected as renderer in the description's output options and if it still doesn't render, please provide us with a sample scene and the version of V-Ray you're using.
I think we may be talking about different things here. XGen Groomable splines do work for me. In Maya 2017, there is a new hair definition called 'Interactive Groom'. It does not appear to have an option to select a renderer, as far as I can see.
