  • Material IDs and Volume grids

    Hi Guys,

We are having a few problems with Material IDs and volume grids. The zdepths stuff is working nicely.

But not sure how to get the setting labled ''volumetric material id'' to work in the render elements tab. Are we missing something obvious?

We are changing the colour - but it doesnt show up in the material ids or multimattes (maybe we are missing a check box somewhere).

    We are using Vray 3.4.3.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

    Will

    Hello,

You need to set your Render Mode to Volumetric Geometry in order for the Material IDs to work.

Thanks for your response. This makes sense and it works - but if we use volumetric geometry it will completely different to our current look. So does it mean that we have to render a custom render layer to get nice IDs? (ie if i have 3 volume grids in a scene and I want to have an RGB id for each?)

The volumetric geometry mode is made for such purposes only - it will be slower to render beauty passes but you can use utility ones. Still if you want to render beauty in this mode - you can increase your Max Transparency Levels and this will make it to look more like the Pure Volumetric mode. And yes if you need all the passes separately probably custom render layer will be the best option.

          Awesome - thanks!

We really enjoyed using the volume grids on the current project. Definitely a nice tool to work with.
