  • 1 floating user license 11 floating render node licenses

    Hi all

We have a studio of Macs, currently using Maya and Mental Ray.

We are looking to buy V-Ray, initially looking at '1 floating user license 11 floating render node licenses'.

Are there any tutorials showing how to set up Distributed Rendering across several macs, and the do's and don't for such a setup, before we buy.

    Cheers

Distributed rendering allows multiple machines to join in parallel simultaneous rendering reducing render times. The number of machines which will be used to render should be equal to the number of Render Node licenses. Once the scene is prepared, in the V-Ray settings menu within Maya all the servers has to be added by IP address(one time process which can be edited as needed) and then submitted over to the machines which will render the image or animation.

In order to use V-Ray you need to have V-Ray license server installed. V-Ray uses Floating licensing system which means the license server can be installed on one machine and it can distribute licenses to multiple machines across a network. Each of the machines has to be configured to obtain its licenses from the V-Ray license server and each machine needs to have running V-Ray Standalone client, which is a Standalone installation and Maya installation will not be a requirement.

Additional network configuration would be to make sure ports 30304, the port used by the license server and port 20207, the port used by the Distributed rendering, has to be open and accessible on each machine.

      Hi Svetlozar

      Great, thanks for the info.

Just a query on the Standalone installations - will these require an additional purchase?

To clarify, will we be able to render on all 12 machines with the purchase of the '1 floating user license 11 floating render node licenses' version.

      Cheers

No, V-Ray Standalone is included into V-Ray for Maya installation so no additional purchases are required.
The number of the machines you will be able to render simultaneously would be equal to the render node licenses in your case with 11 render node licenses you will be able to render on 11 machines.
The workstation license which you call it floating user license is used in Maya UI and scene export before the rendering, it is not used for the rendering stage.
