  • Hdr image display Dome

When are we gonna see a proper HDR image displayed on a Dome light in Viewport 2.0 soon?
This feature really needs some attention.

Is really hard to use Legacy viewport on heavy scenes like environments just to check the HDR sun position for lighting...the viewport response on Legacy is terrible for large files.
Please put this closer to priority list....please.
    Thanks guys.

I agree. Legacy viewport should honestly never be needed for anything at thing point. The performance is so far beyond what is available in the legacy viewport, that it's not even an option for most of the scenes I work on, even for a second.

What would be "proper" displaying of the HDR in the viewport? There are things to improve, undoubtedly, but there is support for displaying the texture from the dome light in Viewport 2.0 (for Maya 2016 and later make sure you're on the Core Compatibility OpenGL Profile in Maya's settings and preferences > Display). You'll need to enable textured view for the viewport and the dome texture should show up. In the Dome Light's attributes, there should also be an option to display the texture multiplied by the light's intensity (the gamma and sRGB options don't work for the moment, but that's know and we'll fix it at some point soon, I hope). If you have something else in mind, please do let us know, it might help us improve the feature.

Thanks yolov, I think my post was not very clear, To view the correct position of an HDR image on a dome in Viewport 2.0 you need to use Horizontal rotation values and not use the Dome manipulator with Use Transform checked, the Horizontal rotation slider in Viewport 2.0 is extremely slow
to update, I can never use it...on the other hand Legacy with "Use Transform checked" updates fast and is simple to use as an IBL should be, unfortunately Legacy in heavy scenes is unbearable.
Viewport 2.0 is great at showing tons of models and textures but the Dome sphere rotation is terrible.
I often find myself rendering a scene looking at the wrong viewport engine or simply forgetting that I changed the settings for dome rotation and have to abort the render.
All I'm saying we should have by now (as user smbell points out) a Dome light that works well in the Viewport 2.0, I understand this has been difficult with every new implementation of the viewport by Autodesk but just wanted to know if this request is in the works.
        Thanks for your help.

That would be something that we'll have to look into, thanks for the detailed explanation.

Seems really concerning that it's that slow. I've logged a bug report and we'll see if something can be done about this. Thanks for all the information.

Thanks Alex, I'll keep my fingers crossed for some improvements on the Dome.
As a final note , even just a dome with low res 2k HDr on an empty scene does not rotate fast using the Horizontal rotation slider..it chugs....honestly sometimes i wonder about these game cards, can't say I'm too happy
about these Dual Titan Z cards ,there was so much of a hype when they came out .
              Thank you.
