  • Dongle - Online license

Is it yet possible to exchange our dongle to be an online license?
This would be very handy due to the fact I have left it at home and cannot render all day!!

+1 for this feature. However, good luck. It has been talked about (and promised) for years. Nothing has happened, yet. Probably won't.

I would be ok with a much smaller dongle. The one I have is a big, green, ugly and impractical device. In this time of technological improvements, you would think this is possible.

While technically this is possible, we would like to hold off this for a bit longer until we have a way to automatically transfer licenses from the dongle to your online account rather than our support team having to reprogram the dongle etc.

        Best regards,

          Hi Vlado,

Thanks for your reply. I personally prefer the online acccount method over a smaller dongle. Is there an expected timeframe for implementing a transition from dongle to online licensing? I asked this about a year ago and the answer was a couple months

We are obviously bad at giving timeframes, so I don't want to lead you on again I'm told that it will be "soon", but that can mean anything.

I would also really like to see this also as when freelancing and moving around various offices trying to render animations from one dongle is a nightmare.

I dont think its all that fair that new users can do this but not some of us users who have been using/supporting the software for 14 years cant....

              Sorry for the rant

                We'll get to it.

+1 for this. The online licensing could've saved my bacon this weekend. My computer at home was failing/crashing during rendering and I was on a very tight timeline. Would've loved to be able to vpn into my work computer, transfer the project over, and keep rendering, but the dongle based license prevented me from doing so. If we can't transfer using a utility, is there a way we can do this with a support request? I.e. manually return/deactivate our dongle in exchange for the new license based service?

I agree with the above but I guess this will never happen.....

Finally just swapped from the dongle to online & all is working great so far! It took a while but thanks for sorting this.

Before I do this is there any possibility that the License servers could go down and thus preventing usage for VRay?

Yes, there's been some progress - you can now transfer your dongle licenses to your online chaos group account. There are some requirements, though: for example, you need to have the latest version of the license server (I think 4.5.0 and later have this option). Then there's requirements about the licenses themselves, so if you follow the instructions from our documentation and still don't see the option available to you, then it would be best to contact our support team.

This shouldn't happen But if you are running into any problems, try our licensing forums https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/licensing-forums or contact our support team. They'll let you know how to download and send over some debug logs from the license server so the team can see if there's an issue somewhere.
