  • Last bucket hangs in Vray 3.6?

I'm noticing a couple of things about Vray 3.6.

The first is that it now does not seem to be as responsive as previously when killing a render into the VFB, using the Esc key. This was something I always really liked about Vray -- it was generally pretty quick to abort a render. Is there a reason for this?

Also now noticing that I'm getting significantly longer than average (for the frame) render times on the last one or two tiles when rendering into the VFB. This didn't seem to be happening with previous versions...

Anyone else experiencing this? I'm using Maya 2018 with update installed.

Usually if the history is turned on this takes a little while to save after a rendered frame and I usually leave one core free to enable the pc to do other stuff which seems to help with quitting a render process.

You mean history in the VFB? I think that would only add any time to write out an image? I'm talking about an exponentially longer time on the final bucket.

I will try limiting the number of cores I'm using and see if that helps with aborting renders. I usually just work with Low Thread Priority checked.

If you have a machine with lots of core like 16- 32 or so, lower the bucket size to 12 -14, each core will have much less to do and it won't get stuck. It can knock 10 or more minutes of longer renders.

Thanks. Good advice, although I have found in the past that sometimes smaller bucket sizes can cause problems with in-camera motion blur against alpha (which I happen to be currently using), with some almost empty tiles missing pixels at their edges. However, this is a rare scenario so thanks for the tip!
