  • Gum shaders

    Hello everyone, '

Working on a quick project for a client and wanted the advice of the forum. Looking to create this gum rubber shader for the outsole and was wondering if anyone had any ideas how to go about it. The gum rubber looks translucent with a small amount of sub-surface scattering. Any ideas and suggestions are welcome. Just trying to get as close as possible for this shader.

Regular Vray material with glossy refractions and some fog would be the way I would tackle it. Maybe some fresnel/falloff to help get the lighter color where the sole faces away from the camera.

      Hey Sony,

Thanks for the feedback. You saying to use a vray falloff on the the color slot for the VrayMtl? What ior + glossiness combination would be a good start, you think, based on this chart.

The IOR depends on the material but for rubber I usually start with around 1.5. I have that same chart but usually don't find it that helpful and it's a case of eyeballing and testing....

This is a good representation of what I would like the shader to look like. Would be nice if it was a Maya vray shader. This one is free for 3DS Max.

You can also get that kind of look with the SSS shader. Sometimes it's a case of testing which approach is better.

VRayFastSS2Mtl with the "skin (brown)" preset gives you something very close to that image. I think you could get far with that as a starting point.
