  • Animating VrayWater at a consistent speed?

    Hi all,

We are just doing a small project and needed to add some water in the distance so thought we would just use the VrayWater Map.

How would we go about animating the water to move/flow at a consistent speed?

Animating the "rate" basically just speeds up the motion of the water so keyframing a low number to high number the water just starts slow and moves faster

Is there a setting that can be used to make it move at a constant/consistent speed?

    Thanks,

    Richard

This is expected behavior. By default, the waves are moving with constant speed, so you would need to set a fixed value for the "Rate" parameter in order to speed up/down the movement. Animating the "Rate" with progressive values would not give you the desired effect.

      Hi Nikolay,

      Thanks for the response.

I had this thought when I was testing but setting the rate to a fixed value and then rendering frames didn’t see any movement in the water at all. It was static over all the frames.

Is there another attribute that needs to be key framed in order to see this consistent movement over frames?

      Thanks,

      Richard

This is strange, have you tried it on a new simple scene. Could you send us a scene example so we could take a look? Also, could you tell us what is the exact version of V-Ray and Maya that you are using?

          Hi Nikolay,

Using Maya 2018. Vray Next For Maya Update 1 stable release. (vray_adv_41201_maya2018_x64)

I will try in a clean scene and also send you the scene asap.

          Best,

          Richard

            Hi Nikolay,

So it does appear to be working in a simple test scene. An issue why I was not noticing it working in the other scene may have been because I was playing with a lower rate of just 1 and it might have been too low for me to see obvious movement over time. In my test scene I just set it to 16 and it was clear there was movement over time.

            Anyway thanks for your support.

            Best,

            Richard
