  • Render Error: V-Ray error: File name too long

We're rendering some scenes with multiple camera per layer for a projection project and Maya has the amazing ability to put in the camera name into the filepaths, resulting in an output path that is much longer than we normally have. (e.g. 270 characters) on our Windows machines and V-Ray seems to have some troubles with it and raises the File name too long error. This is likely due to old Windows behavior that caused problems with these long paths.

However, with recent Windows 10 builds there's a feature that resolves this, however enabling that doesn't seem to resolve it for V-Ray. See: https://superuser.com/a/1119980
Some more recent information about long Windows paths: https://allzpark.com/windows/#long-file-paths

Is there any way we can render to the paths Maya is trying to? Or what would be a workaround? Is V-Ray capable of doing this?

I'll log this in the bug tracking system. Unfortunately, we don't have a workaround at the moment.

It seems that enabling long paths isn't enough. Each application has to tell Windows that it supports long paths. Unfortunately the application in this case is Maya, which doesn't support long paths.
