  • Is there a minimum Maya 2018 version for using V-Ray Next?

    Hello,
Is there a minimum Maya 2018 version for using V-Ray 4.30.00? We are getting intermittent crashes: sometimes the scene renders correctly and sometimes it crashes. We are using Maya 2018.2 with V-Ray 4.30.00. Should these versions be compatible?

Generally speaking they should be compatible. With that said to neutralize any issues I would recommend updating maya to latest sp possible (which is sp6) I believe since vray is most likely compiled against the sdk for the latest maya in 2018 branch.

      What Dmitry said.
V-Ray for Maya 2018 should run the same on all 2018 versions (updates included).
Usually, when there's something wrong, the log in the Maya output window or the script editor may give us some clues, so if you see any errors in either place, just give us a sign.
And something to keep in mind - there _may_ be cases where Maya itself bares some issues and an update to Maya fixes it, so it's never a bad idea to run the latest update to the Maya version you're using.

Thanks. We are getting a crash with V-Ray 4.30.00 on windows when using V-Ray proxies and wasn't sure if an "older" dot release of Maya 2018 is the culprit. We will try the same scene with an earlier version of V-Ray 4.

Can you give us a bit more details? What's the steps to reproduce this? Does it happen on importing a proxy or when rendering?

The crash is random. We retry the job and it usually succeeds, though may take a couple of tries. It always crashes very early on, in the Maya scene reading process:

I am trying to reduce the scene to a simple test case. Will keep you posted.

If you manage to get it to crash, try and fetch the logs and the .dump file from the user temp directory. That might give us some clues. Just a note - that we'll need to know the exact build number of V-Ray and the Maya version to be able to get something out of it, but those are printed at the beginning of the log when V-Ray is initialized.

Or yes, if you can get us a simple scene that reproduces it, it will be even better.
