  • Vray 5 filmic tonemapping baking into render elements

    Hello

Is it possible to bake in filmic tonemapping in the neccesary render elements to rebuild the image in photoshop. Currently if i tick save in image in the display correction layer in the VFB, it bakes the tonemapping into the rgb of a multilayer exr, but when i try to rebuild the rgb with the render elements is obviously doenst bake this into the elements and it is differnret to the rgb

    thanks

    matt

The correct way of applying color corrections or filmic tone mapping is after the Beauty render's reconstruction. Usually, you save a LUT file (expect it soon in the stable nightlies) from the adjusted corrections within the VFB2, to be applied on top of the reconstructed RGB in PS. For now, however, you can find the filmic tonemap presets as LUT files on the web to be applied in PS or alternatively, export the image from PS, and import in VFB2 back again to apply the tone map.

Hi Aleksander, do you have a link to the presets on the web and are they specificly designed to match vfb2s such has hable? Also any update on when we will be able to save out LUTs from VFBv2

        thanks in advance

          hi there,

Do you have an update to this, i would really like to impliment it in a live job, but not being able to recreate the filmic tonemapping as a LUT in photoshop using multilayer exrs is kind of a deal break for me

          thanks

Sorry to say the said "Save to LUT" file is not yet implemented in the stable builds. Also, I cannot give you a specific preset from the web, they are available, even though some are paid for. Your best bet would be to project the sequence on a plane in Maya and render, so as to apply the corrections in the VFB2, as already mentioned.

              Hi alexsandar,

thats a real shame, for years vray built in tone mapping has not supported render elements adding up in multilayer exrs to match the RGB making it useless for your pipeline, the results simply do not add up, I had high hopes that vray5 would resolve this issue, but again it seems the release isnt fully implimented yet.

DO you have an ETA for "save to LUT" implimentation?

I dont really understand what you are refering to in bringing the comp back into VFB to apply the corrections, This doesnt seem a very linear way of working. We work mainly on cars and the files need to pass on to retoucher and then to client, for the retoucher not to see what i have supplied is a real shame, also we dont work in 32bit though out our pipeline, we use a 32 bit donar with basic correction and cleanup as needed and then save a flat and place it into our 8bit stack. So i really dont see the relevance of bringing that back into VFB2 to apply tonemapping.

This was one of our main reasons to upgrade now im scratching my head a little.

              thanks

how about simulating filmic in photoshop with lin2log LUT and curves? 32bit smart object in 16bit psd file. certainly not 1:1 adjustments but you should be able to get pretty much the same result.

you can now create it in VFB using curves. match the default white point of vray’s filmic.

ok, scratch that. I’m not able to make it work in photoshop (although using quite old version) with one lut.
use levels adjustment to get something close to log color look and create in VFB lut that will add contrast back similar to filmic (with curves, within 0-1 range).
