  • Saving colour corrections to exr file

I must be doing something wrong with my exr settings. Ive been trying to render exrs out with glare and glow, so Im tonemapping in the framebuffer (rather than in render settings since it clamps off the values). These images are going straight into Photoshop and a non-linear workflow, so we dont want 32bit exrs, we need it all baked out in a beauty. (Beauty pass tonemapped and glare pass separately).

Ive ticked the "Save colour corrections to raw files" and set to exr render, and set my highlight compression and tweaks in the framebuffer, but the render comes out untonemapped which is no good for Photoshop. Is there anything I need to be aware of when trying to do this workflow? On my last project I just rendered to PNG which worked and gave me what I want, but EXR has better alpha channel options when you open it in Photoshop, so Id rather use that.

Also, Im rendering via deadline. Vray Next GPU 4.3 and Maya 2018

Are you rendering single-channel .exrs? Color correction application is not yet supported for this format. An improvement request is already logged (internal bug-tracker id: VMAYA-9773). As a workaround, set your output to multi-channel .exrs.

Ah ok, thats where I was going wrong. I was rendering single channel exrs. Im rendering to png for now, but I will test the multi-channel exr. Im not sure how well that workflow will go with Photoshops stacking tools. I think EXR-io might deal with it ok, but again, its extra steps to get everything stacked into on comp. Thanks for the response.

Is this issue fixed in Vray 5?

Not yet, it affects V-Ray 5 as well.
