  • VRayCarPaintMtl vs VRayCarPaint2Mtl

    Hey guys,

not sure if it has been already posted but I am having quite some trouble with the carpaint shader. First of all it looks completely different in default. In my recent project I had so weired reflections going on that I had to switch back to the old one. It almost looked like anisotropic reflection. And also it was impossible to tune that Shader within Vray IPR in ViewPort. One single change on any attribute within my scene and Maya instantly crashed. On a scene with a test sphere it works but as soon as the scene gets a bit more dense it does not work anymore.

Beside that I made a quick test and applied the two versions on two spheres. First image is right after applying - second after changing the mapping to triplanar. That can´t be right? The left one is the old shader - right is V2. There are no flakes? Am I missing something?

    Thanks in advance

    Hello there,
Is it possible to tell us which build of V-Ray you are using, does the same problem occures with VRayFlakes2Mtl too and which Maya version you are using?
Another information, which will be useful is also what OS you are using?

      Hi Dimitrina

I am sorry - I forgot my specs.

Im on Mac OS X 10.14.6 Mojave. Old Mac Pro late 2013 / Maya is 2020.2 and Vray is 5.00.20 from August.

Unfortunately also the Flake Material looks weired to me but see for your self.

        Hello again,
Can you please check for the same problem with a more recent stable build, since this problem is supposed to be fixed there? However, if the problem still occurs even with a more recent build, please notify us and we will have a further look into it.

          Hi Dimitrina,

we have installed the 5.00.21 from September and those stripes seem to be gone. So far so good. But what I notice is the discrepancy in the settings between the two versions. Scale and measurements are not the same anymore and I am struggling to get similar looks between the two shaders. Beside the Help in the documentary is there any additional information about the usage of those values? Thanks in advance.
And to be honest - I feel that the scale does not work properly after a certain value. Flakes don´t get bigger then.

              Hi,

in the latest nightly build we have made some fixes:

              - triplanar mapping is on by default
              - there is a new parameter "Flake scale triplanar" which works similarly to the old car paint.

I am attaching two renders with CarpaintMtl (left) and CarpaintMtl2 (right) with different flake scales in triplanar mode. I attach the scene as well.
If you have further problems please send a scene and I will look into it.

              Best regards,
              Asen
