  • Blurry / glossy refractions and glow / glare

Im wondering about the lens fx when using blurry refractions. If I have a bulb behind glass, and the glass is 1.0 clear crisp refraction glossiness, I get strong lens fx. If I make the glossiness 0.99 I lose so much of the intensity. Is this normal? Id get it for frosted glass, that the light is being diffused a lot, but it seems to happen even at high glossy values that are non 1.0

    Hello there,

Is it possible for you to send a scene and images/video with which you are able to reproduce the problem?
Also what are the spects you are using (OS, Maya version, V-Ray version)

    Kind Regards,
    Dimitrina Milanova

Heres a simple scene to show the issue.

Frame1 has 1.0 refraction gloss. Frame2 has 0.995 gloss value. If you render in RT (or production) you can switch between the frames and see that the lens FX result are hugely different. I get almost no lens fx from the 0.995 gloss refraction and loads from the 1.0 gloss frame. Id imagine theyd be similar, no?

          Hello again,

It seems that the result you are achieving is expected because of the Clamp max ray intensity option in the Overrides Render Settings.
This is how this option is working: Ituses the Max ray intensity value to suppress the contribution of very bright rays, which can typically cause excessive noise (fireflies) in the rendered image. The Max ray intensity value is applied only to GI and glossy rays, so with glossiness 1.0 it's not applied.
Depending on the wanted result the option mentioned above can be disabled.

          Kind Regards,
          Dimitrina Milanova

Ok, that makes sense. Thanks for the reply. Is there any plans to make this option local to each shader? Id ideally like to have the option to turn that max ray intensity off, but have blurry settings on some shaders but not others.

              Hello,

For now there are no plans for this to be implemented in the near future, but surely it will be something considered.

              Kind Regards,
              Dimitrina
