  • Adaptive Dome Light and Light Cache Issue

    Issue 1:
In my scene there are 2 Dome lights. One has a HDRI and the other is to brighten up the shadows.
When I render secondary Rays in BF it is fine. When switching over to LC I get a visible seam in my render. I noticed, that the seam is gone in LC Mode when turning off the Adaptive Mode on my non HDI Dome light.

    see attachement

Another thing that is bugging me:
The light intensities behave weird. I attached a video demonstrating what is happening.
When I add the second dome light to the scene, the intensities don't add up in a understandable way. I have to turn on and off my HDRI Dome light to get correct intensities. When I adjust on my non HDRI Dome light, it gets darker again.

Working in Maya 2020.4, VRay 5.00.23, Windows 10

Can't upload the Videofile here showing the second issue. So here's a download link.

Yup, I happened to have this issue several times with LC. Finally, most of the times, I'm working without adaptative dome.

Ive been using adaptive dome almost constantly, and it only just happened on a shot for me a day or so ago. brute force fixed it, but I dont know what caused it since I work the same way all the time.

How do you find working without adaptive dome? Are you using portals instead ?
I have it on for 90% of the time (Archviz) but after years of development of adaptive HDRI it still gives me errors from time to time.

No Portals used. I'm not doing archviz but aircraft and yacht interiors/exteriors. I don't see a huge time difference in using or not adaptative dome light, but I didn't take the time to make a proper comparision. Adaptative dome light is not an option for me as I noticed so often squares with slightly different light intensity in the pictures. As adaptative is on by default, sometimes if forget to deactivate it and get the bugs in my first tests..... but now I know exactly where to look when I see this kind of thing.
Using non adaptative dome light is still way faster than using pure brute force

          cheers

I have read about this issue in a few other posts here in the forums, but it seems that this issue exists for a while.

              No response to this yet.

doppelgaengerdigital Do send the scene via the contact form (or attach a dropbox link here) so we can take a look. Address it to me in the subject and include a link to this thread in the message.

doppelgaengerdigital Thanks for the provided scene. From what I tested, both issues seem to be gone in the stable nightly builds.
The artifacts are caused by the use of two dome lights. The odd light intensity additiveness seems to depend on the position in the outliner. Switching the 12-intensity dome light with the 1-intensity seems to produce expected results. I am not yet certain what is causing this.

hello! the dome light artifacts seem to be gone, at least here on my private pc. that's great! I will test the scene again on my office workstation on monday to confirm once more.
I still have banding with OCIO though in 5.1. I reported this bug and it should be worked on, as far as I know.
