  • Vray proxy and material override fireflies

    Good Morning,

We have been having an interesting issue that we have been unable to solve. We consistently get fireflies in scenes that contain proxies with material overrides, all over our other proxies are fine.

Here is the first example, we have car proxies in our scene with an override on the paint material to change the color of the paint per car. We have tried all forms of trouble shooting including turning off GI, setting samples to 1000, rendering in 4k, increasing/decreasing threshold, messing with clamp values and so on. Rendering the image in 4k does help alleviate the issue somewhat, but does not remove it entirely. The cars in the below shots are the only thing with the override of a simple vraycarpaint material. The trees and vegetation around them are also proxies but have no overrides and are not experiencing the same issue. We thought it may just be the sun hitting the cars, but we have an animated car that drives by as well with no override that is not having the same bright spots.

In another scene we have a tree proxy with a leaf override to change the color to better match the scene, and are also getting the same firefly issue. The trees around it, also proxies, do not have the overrides and render just fine.

As for the actual override, we are just plugging a new material into the current overrides section in the object hierarchy.

Has anyone else experienced this issue when using overrides? It's almost like the specular strength is being multiplied when you use an override and its pushing the values outside what can actually be rendered. The weird part is clamping does not seem to affect it at all, even settings the max ray intensity to 0.01 had 0 effect on cleaning it up. Any help with this problem would be appreciated. Thanks -

This happens with just a VRayCarPaintMtl (or highly reflective materials) and a VRaySun. Overriding the material doesn't seem to make a difference. Try turning the VRaySun invisible, it should reduce the fireflies' effect.
