    V-Ray 5 for Maya, update 1 (v5.10.20 from Jun 15 2021)
    Maya 2022
    Substance Designer 11.2.0

    Trying to get MDLs from Substance Designer to render with Vray and Maya.

    I've set my environment variables to:
    VRAY_MDL_PATH_MAYA2022_x64 = C:\Users\morga\Documents\MDL;C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\Maya 2022 for x64\mdl;C:\Program Files\Allegorithmic\Substance Designer\resources\view3d\iray\nvidia;C:\ProgramDa ta\NVIDIA Corporation\mdl

    I am able to render MDLs from the Nvidia vMaterials collection in Vray. Any MDLs exported from Designer give an error like this:
    /MDL2VRAY_CarPaint_V001.mdl': [MDLIntegrator::loadModule] -2: Could not load module "::MDL2VRAY_CarPaint_V001" (-2) //

    I'm trying to track down the issue if anyone has any insight TIA.

    Morgan

    Check this docs page paragraph about Importing MDL Files from Substance Designer. It should be what you're looking for.

      Hi,
      Thanks for the reply. I've followed the suggestions on that page, though for Maya. That's how I arrived at the environment variables in my OP.
      I've tried this process again on another computer with a clean install of Maya 2022 and Vray and am still getting the same error.
      Can you confirm it's working on your end with the latest versions of Vray, Designer, and Maya?
      Thanks!

        There does seem to be something wrong, I'll investigate and write back.

            The issue is likely due to the currently supported MDL versions (at this point V-Ray supports MDL 1.4.3), whereas Substance Designer supports more recent versions of MDL. We'll investigate further to see if that is indeed the case.

              Ok, thanks for checking on that. Are there plans for supporting newer MDL versions?

                    For clarity purposes, MDL materials (version 1.5, 1.6) will, currently, not render directly in V-Ray, due to some unsupported modules. To work around this, the MDL files must either be corrected by hand or be exported in a previous MDL version (1.3, 1.4).

                      Can you clarify a bit more? Will you still be updating the MDL node to support the current version of MDL that Substance Designer is exporting?

                        As I already mentioned, yes. You may share one of your MDL materials so we can confirm that the issue is the difference in versions.
