  • GPU utilization issues on the new Vray builds

    Hello,

The recent builds doesn't use the GPUs at 100% like before, usually utilization bounces between 78% to 85%

Board Power Draw is very low because the GPU is not at 100% load, this specific GPU should be at +110 Watts at full load

Click image for larger version Name:	Screenshot_8.jpg Views:	0 Size:	219.0 KB ID:	1119748

This happens with all scenes, a link to my shaderball scene below.. And this happens on different GPUs, 3060, 3070, 3090
In comparison here is the GPU usage on running Vray's benchmark,

Click image for larger version Name:	Screenshot_15.jpg Views:	0 Size:	907.5 KB ID:	1119749

You can see that GPU load is at 100% and Power Draw is 106 Watts to 110 Watts. Same with other renderers, Octane and Arnold GPU will have GPU usage at 100%

Shaderball Scene here, you need to load ACES 1.2 config file

This doesn't happen with the last stable build,

    vray_adv_51021_maya2022_x64_30891_install.zip

But now there is no log windows in this build.. as if it is behind this nightly buld

im using v5.10.21 and it seems to use 100% gpu when rendering in the VFB, but i think i had issues when lightmix and denoiser renderelements were enabled...(will have to have a proper look though to confirm). BUT, im now doing a batch render and the gpus arent getting above 45%. (this is with no lightmix or denoiser).

      Its all a bit haphazard

        Hey Adrian,

I recommend using the build I linked in my post above, it doesn't have this issue. And on 3Ds Max, I use this build (which doesn't have the issue)

        https://nightlies.chaosgroup.com/#/v...e_5.1/20210727

From my testing I only found the issue present in the recent nightly builds for Maya(stable builds are fine) , and I have denoiser and lens effected calculated on a different GPU.. so they don't affect my rendering

        Best,

        Muhammed

          Hey guys,

We were unable to reproduce the issue with the scene we got from Muhammed_Hamed.

In case any of you encounters something similar again, is it possible to schedule a remote session with either of you so we can investigate on the spot? If so, please get in touch via our contact form so we can arrange the details. Thanks!

Needs to be a 2080Ti or a 3080/3090 the issue is more obvious with stronger GPUs.. utilization drops below 50%
Happens with all scenes here on the nightly nightly builds, will do the contact form

So Im using maya 2019, Vray v5.10.21, revision 30891, using your ACES shaderball scene Mohammed on 2* nvlinked 2080ti. Seriously feels like vray is broken.
                • Am I misinterpreting the GPU usage, because in Bucket mode, the gpu usage hits 99% , when its rendering the red areas with more samples, but drops to around 50% when rendering the blue areas.
                • Is the bucket process causing any issues with the gpu, as in if its assigning them quickly, this interupts the gpu hitting 100%
                • In progressive mode the GPU doesnt get above 40%
                • So am i wrong in expecting it should be at 100% all through the render?
                • Also why is the sample rate completely broken for progressive mode? (see 2nd image)

                  Hey francomanko ,

So am i wrong in expecting it should be at 100% all through the render?
You are right, it should be always at 100% or near that on progressive or bucket

Could you please try this stable build here,

                  https://nightlies.chaosgroup.com/mai...5.1.2/20210806

For me, it doesn't have this issue.. GPU usage is at 100% bucket or progressive and on all areas of the render

                  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBW_B2GxVNY

Also why is the sample rate completely broken for progressive mode? (see 2nd image)
It is not gonna look identical to bucket mode, it will look different. The final render should look fine, or can you explain more what you mean by broken?

The utilization issues are present in some builds yes, like what you described with bucket/progressive. I have been stuck to the recent stable builds for Max/Maya which doesn't have the issue

                  Best,

                    Will do and thx.

I meant broken generally, just because im having quite a few issues, crashes and frustrations at the bugs etc. Probably class my statement as a mini rant

So surely the samplerate image i sent for the progressive isnt correct is it? It doesnt seem to correlate at all?

It is understandable. I have used Vray GPU on my interior scene, used the IPR for hours in 3Ds Max 2022 without a single crash until the end when I used light selects
                      Will get there eventually

So surely the samplerate image i sent for the progressive isnt correct is it?
Is this a crop for some region?
Can you post the full SampleRate element for my shaderball scene?
This is what I usually get, SampleRate usually starts with white, then transitions slowly to green then brighter green then blue/red at the end of the render. This is the expected behavior

White areas are what Vray is currently adding more samples to, blue is where Vray is finished sampling (usually the areas that are fast to render) .. and from Green to Red at the end, Red are areas that need a lot of samples

                        Hello nikoleta.garkova

Thanks for your help last week, I'm now able to use light selects after replacing VRscans in the scene

About the other issue in this thread, where the GPUs are not 100% utilized

                        Using this Nightly build https://nightlies.chaosgroup.com/mai...tlies/20210816

I'm able to render the shaderball scene in 13 minutes

Then on using this stable Build https://nightlies.chaosgroup.com/mai...5.1.2/20210813

The rendering takes 7 minutes, nearly 2 times faster .. nothing changes about the scene, the first build I linked has this GPU utilization issue as I described in this thread

Link to the scene in my post above

                        Maya 2022.1
                        Windows 10 21H1
                        Nvidia Studio driver 471.11
                        RTX 3060 12 GB

I get the same behavior on my other machine with 3090 and 3070

                        Best,

                        Muhammed

                          Hey Muhammed_Hamed,

Thanks for the additional info; we'll test them out once again with the linked builds and report back to you.
