  • OCIO: Maya -> After Effects

    Hello
could someone help me with the most basic workflow, to make Vray Maya Framebuffer and AE (Latest Version) look the same.
I installed the OCIO AE pluggin, but got a bit confused in the wide range of possible in- and outputs.
    Thanks
    Martin

It should work in a similar manner and depend on the color space of your image and how you wish to display it. The OCIO AE plugin has similar display controls as the VFB.

To get identical results through the OCIO plugin, I did the following:

    1. Disable the display color management so as not to duplicate the effect (View>Use Display Color Management)
    2. Add an OpenColorIO effect to the image/sequence and match the Input space, display, and view to the ones in the VFB
    3. Set the image/sequence to Linear color space (RMB in the Project Manager> Interpret Footage> Color Management > Preserve RGB)

I presume it is possible to use a .config file for the Display Color Management mentioned earlier. That should resolve the need for a manual color display through the OCIO node, however.

        thank you so much Muhammed,
one question: when I render not using the AE-internal interface, but the Adobe Media Encoder, does this apply an extra color management?
        thanks

I am also researching this point.
Seems the only way it to use the regular AE render output menu:
            https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effect...anagement.html

in the output module you can en/disable the "preserve rgb"
this way you can bypass AE´s color management in the output.

once in the render list, you can submit to Media Encoder.

Nevertheless I would totally prefer to direct submit to Media Encoder, and disable AE Color Management in there.

Color Management, OCIO and ACES is not for the faint hearted

so if you want to work with AME out of AE the best way seems to work with an "Color Profile Converter" set to:
              in: ACES Working Space
              out: Adobe RGB

in this case you let AE interpret the Color Management (Preserve RGB off)
anyhow I dont get 100% the same tone from the Vray Maya Framebuffer
but the ACES Workflow does work, and I can directly render via AME

if someone needs more details, I can send some screenshots of the menus
              best

Adobe RGB is a different color space, with different primaries, it has to be the reason you are not getting a perfect match
Agreed on the color workflows in Adobe products, it is a big mess and so far no proper color management. The new Painter got OCIO V2, maybe other adobe products will follow, that will make life easier for everyone
