update 5.2 : VFB doesnt seem to save the background in png or tif format from the VFB, it does in exr format, but the corrections or something dont get applied.

this only my opinion maybe there are other workflows
VFB does save the background but also the alpha channel in png and tiff formats. When you import or load the images, configure after effect or photoshop to open the image without transparency.
I understand that the exr format is a 32-bit linear format in raw without the color corrections, you will have to reproduce the color corrections in the post production program, remember that you can reproduce them manually or you can use LUTs, you can save the color correction del vfb as a LUT file.
I recommend that you do not save the Exposure layer in the LUT file and reproduce it in the post production program, but try to use some plugin to make it of the Reinhard type in after effect.
