  • Repeated Crashes with the Framebuffer.

I'm getting constant repeated crashes when trying to do IPR renders with the Framebuffer in both Maya 2022 & 2018, on two seperate computers (both running RTX2080tis) with rendering various different projects (nothing too complicated, fairly simple product shots in a CG studio). It seems that I press the IPR button, the framebuffer processes for a few seconds before it hangs then makes Maya disappear. Sometimes it'll work and I can tweak my shaders etc, then now more often than not it just hangs up on me before it even gets to the rendering stage so I can tweak my shaders/lighting.
Its happening A LOT, like all the time.

Is anyone else getting this? Will there be a new more stable update out anytime soon?

    Specs:
    Vray 5.20.02
    Windows 10
Rendering on GPU with a RTX 2080ti card, running game ready driver 511.65

Hey, does this happen with IPR and regular V-Ray (as opposed to V-Ray GPU)?
If you're using Light Cache for GI - does it happen with Brute Force GI?
Does it still crash if you launch a production render (as opposed to IPR)?

      Hey Yolov,
Thank you for the reply. I think it renders ok with regular V-Ray whilst using IPR, although I haven't tested this thoroughly as my CPU isn't that fast for rendering - its a Intel 6700k.
I'm using Brute Force GI, I haven't tested this with Light Cache. - Edit, it happens with the light cache too
Production renders are fine, they render out ok without any crashes. It just seems to be when I launch an IPR that it crashes.

Does it happen with every scene or just with a particular one?

It's been happening with a variety of scenes, on two seperate PCs that I use (work/home).

Do you have the Out-of-core option enabled when it crashes?

I've tried to monitor when it happens just now, as its happening today... The frame buffer will go through it's loading process, compiling kernels and then it seems to happen when it changes to loading the bitmaps. That's when it'll hang up, freeze maya and make the entire program disappear. Overal textures size in my scene is pretty small, under 20-25mb.

No, that's unticked. I'm using just V-Ray GPU with no RTX.

Sorry to hear about the instability sebbiej

We are looking into this now, You can try this checkbox here in the file node. It might be helpful, let me know
Are you using the native Maya ACES setup or ACES 1.2 ?

Thank you Muhammed. Apologies for moaning about the instability!

I've been using the native Maya ACES set up, but it's also been happening with the old Scene-linear Rec 709/sRGB rendering colour space. I'm not sure what checkbox you might mean though? I think an image may be missing from your post...

I will update the thread with more information about this soon, we will probably request remote access to your machine if possible
So far I reproduced with the ACES 1.2 setup, but it is not easy to reproduce. Using the IPR reliably today on a 3090 and 3080ti here, the crash is triggered sometimes on swapping this Color Space dropdown after adding a file node
I have a 2060 Super that I will install and test as well in case this is about Turing GPUs

                      Best,

Hi Muhammed, just to let you know I'm still getting these crashes with the new version of V-Ray and Maya 2023...
                        Apologies for not replying sooner!

                          Hi sebbiej

I have ran into 2 crashes in like one week of using Maya's IPR, in some sessions I use it for +6 hours without hitting a single crash. It seems to be reliable in my testing so far
If the crashes are easy to reproduce on your side we will need to take a look at your setup, please let me know if this is possible

                          Best,
                          Muhammed

                            Hi Muhammed,
Thank you for the reply and for the offer to take a look at my setup. Over the last couple of weeks with the latest version, I am now finding it a lot more stable than it used to be... If I do run in to more problems on a particular scene I'll let you know!
                            Thanks,
                            Seb

I'm still getting this crash repeatedly, daily, on different projects. It's getting rather infuriating to say the least.

Is there any chance of Chaos looking at this for a fix? I don't want to have to spend a ton of money upgrading to 6 pretty soon just to get this error fixed...
