  • triplanar + vray subdivision or smooth proxy + displacement = edge continuity does not work correctly

When using the triplanar node in Maya, displacement does not properly maintain the continuity when using V-Ray subdivision surfaces or Smooth Proxy subdivision even with the checkbox enabled for the displacement control. However, it DOES work correctly with OpenSubdiv (last image)

Have you tried using the VRayDisplacement instead?

That's what I was using for displacement. The subdivision method breaks the edge continuity with the triplanar node. It only works correctly with opensubdiv.

Sorry, must have missed the second image. I made some tests and managed to reproduce cracks (usually along the sides in Production) with both V-Ray Subdivision and OpenSubdiv (in different places, though). The good news is that our internal builds do not exhibit the issue. Until the fix is pushed to the stable builds and if it yields satisfactory results, use OpenSubdiv. An alternative would be to use a 3d texture with which to displace.
