  • Where can I find vrayLightMeshProperties_Link ??

    Hi,

I need to render mesh light illumination on a separate Render Element.

The docs say in two different places that I need to add the vrayLightMeshProperties_Link node to the LightSelect node. But there is no explanation of where I can find this. I looked through the Vray menu and the Attribute Editor > Attributes menu and could not find any reference to this.

    Where can I find this?

Is it listed under some other name?

Why doesn't the documentation tell me what I need to know?

Is there documentation on this node specifically?

Please, this is an emergency, I need to get this sorted out immediately.

    Thank you,

    Aaron

OK, I figured it out. Documentation is wrong, and also incomplete.

There is no such node type as vrayLightMeshProperties_Link.

The actual node in question is labeled VRayLightMeshLightLinking. It is created when the node labeled VRayLightMesh is created. Its icon in the Outliner looks like an ordinary Maya Set.

In the Outliner, this VRayLightMeshLightLinking node needs to be dragged into the VRayRenderElementSet node for the appropriate Light Select Render Element.

Please update the documentation to correct the names of nodes. It is no good at all to tell users to go looking for something that does not exist by that name!

Please update the documentation to explain how to accomplish the task. "Add X to Y" does not give enough information to the user. You need to specifically explain what action needs to take place. In this case, dragging one node to another in the Outliner. I am aware that this is standard operating procedure in Vray for Maya. Regardless, you still need to make this MUCH more clear. I suggest the following:

    --------------------------------------------

In order to use VRayLightMesh properties with LightSelect render element, go to the Outliner. There you'll find a node labeled with the suffix "_vrayLightMeshProperties_lightlink". The name for this node type in the Attribute Editor is "VRayLightMeshLightLinking". Drag the light linking node into the Render Element set, which is labeled "vrayRE_Light_Select" in the Outliner. The name for the render element node type in the Attribute Editor is "VRayRenderElementSet".

Thank you for posting that stezza, but I just tested the workflow. That string shows up in the VRayLightMesh Extra Attributes, but it does not actually enable mesh light rendering in the Light Select Render Element. I have to drag the VRayLightMeshLightLinking node into the VRayRenderElementSet for it to actually work.
