  • accidentally assigned a vray shader to a display layer, froze maya

This doesnt happen often, in fact its the first time it has happened...but I thought I had an object selected, but I had the objects shader instead. Added to display layer, froze Maya, lost an hours work. Not a biggie, since its not common, but itd be cool if it just says "error, cant assign to layer" or something instead.

    Hello seandunderdale

I was unable to reproduce the issue. As, I had a Display Layer selected and assigned a V-Ray MTL and no crash occurred.

Does it reproduce every time or just this one time? It would be great if you could open a new scene and try reproducing it. If you manage to reproduce it, a screen recording of the crash would be appreciated if provided.

Also, please, let us know what Maya version and exact V-Ray version you are using.

      Im using Maya 2023.3 and V-Ray 6 for Maya, update 1 (v6.10.00, revision 32127 from Jun 10 2023)

It happens to me in a new scene. Make display layer, make vray mat, select vray mat, right click on display layer, add selected, maya freeze / crash.

It didnt crash Maya the first time it happened, or when I tested in a new scene....but I just tested again in a new Maya, doing to steps above, and it did crash this time

            Hello seandunderdale

I would like to inform you that our Software Developers have investigated the issue and concluded that it is not V-Ray related as it can be reproduced with V-Ray not being installed (by applying a Maya Standard Surface Shader instead of V-Ray MTL). In that regards, I would advise you to report the situation to the Autodesk Support and discuss it with them.

ok, thanks for looking into it! I do find that reporting stuff on autodesk forum doesnt often result in many fixes. No where near the clear and engaged feedback we get from you guys. To be honest, if you guys release a stable Blender version I will probably switch over, so Im not super invested in Maya long term anymore.

Thank you for the feedback, seandunderdale It would be a shame to lose you from the Maya conversations but will keep in mind your Blender preferences.

I dont want that to be taken as any slight on what you guys do with Vray for Maya. Ive been using it for well over 10 yrs and clients seem to be happy with my work. Its more the roadmap for Maya vs Blender. I don't do character animation, so Maya's biggest asset has no value for me. The more I see of Blender's evolution the more I look forward to eventually putting Maya down. (and saving on fees to autodesk!)

We were able to reproduce the bug without V-Ray and we reported it to Autodesk. It's a regression in Maya 2024 and 2024.1. Thanks for reporting!
