  • remapHsv destroys HRD lighting

Maya 2023.3 Vray 5 latest June update, when applying a Maya remapHsv to a skydome the lighting from the hdr1 image gets killed, could you guys put in the to do list please?

RemapHsv in default values breaks lighting, this does not happen with the new Maya color correct node.

    Thanks.

In the remapHsv node there's a Input and Output Ranges. If you set a high value (to avoid clamping) for the Input/Output Max. there won't be any loss of information.

Thanks for the reply Aleks, I believe there's a problem with this node, the Input/Output Max should not be touched when you connect the node , also when changing the values as you suggested didn't do anything and in fact just
ruins the cloud image in the background and the lighting. This node also had a problem before and still does for my Vray 5 version , when connected it blurs the HDR in the viewport, not in the render, I hear this was fixed in Vray 6.
Also the RemapHSV should just work as the color correct node does when connected, no changes.
I've zipped the simple scene below.

I don't think Maya's remap nodes work as the ColorCorrect. Like Aleksandar writes, the remap nodes (remapColor, remapValue, remapHsv) clamp the input to the "Input Min" / "Input Max" range. That's how it's always been, from what I remember at least.

If you set both inputMax and outputMax to something like 1000000 (or any value above the brightest pixel in your hdri), it should simply pass through the input values like you expect.

Hi Dan, maybe I should just ignore this node for the dome and just stick to the new Color correct node unfortunately both Blur the HDR in the viewport, setting inputMax and Output Max will blow out the image when rendering, it's just that I use this node
quite often for texturing but it looks I was mistaken if using in conjunction with a HDR. I still wonder why Color Correct doesn't clamp anything under the hood but remap does.
          Thanks for the help.

Okay I got it working now Dan with the high numbers you suggested in both sliders, very helpful to understand this now, although I'll still need to use the color correct node because the remap it ruins the viewport. Many thanks to both of you.
