    Spot Light Area Shadows?

    Is there a way to get Vray area shadows with a standard Maya spot light?

    Yes, just increase the "Light Radius" parameter in the "Raytrace shadow attributes" section. You will also need to increase the "Shadow rays" parameter to something like 8 to clean up the noise.
