  • Cannot map place2dTexture attributes with a texture

    Hi Guys,

i know it's not very common but sometimes i need to map attributes in the place2Dtexture node...in mentalray everything works fine, but in vray nothing happens....is this a known limitation?

In my case i want to map the repeat.u value with a projection.

    thx in advance
    Oliver

Yes, this is a known limitation and we have it noted for fixing as another user has requested it as well. You could say we haven't done it for performance reasons ( although the speed difference will probably be negligible).

      Hey Vladimir,

      thx for fixing this!!!

Do you know how many other nodes may not work with textured attributes? It would be cool if you could fix this globally for all nodes, cause you never know how sick maya shading guys are and where they connect their stuff

      cheers

No need to thank me, as I haven't fixed this yet. I'll write back here when it is fixed.

Unfortunately it is not possible to fix this globally, V-Ray plug-ins distinguish between color/float parameters that can be mapped with a texture and those that are simple values. For the most part color attributes of Maya textures/utilities can be mapped with a texture in V-Ray ( I haven't checked this for all of them, but I think that's true for all of them).

Most float attributes of procedural textures on the other hand cannot be mapped with a texture in V-Ray. I've done this specifically for some of the procedural textures, for example the checker "contrast" attribute, all the marble, snow and cloth float attributes. I've done this for these particular textures because we have implemented them somewhat similarly to their Maya counterparts. It's probably worth doing this for the leather/granite/grid/bulge textures as they have a very good V-Ray implementation as well. Most of the other procedural textures are just mapped to perlin noise, so we can convert them to use float textures in one go, but I'm not sure it's worth it, since you cannot reliably use them, they give pretty different results compared to Maya.

Ok, this is fixed for tomorrow's nightly build, the one from 2010-04-15. Please test it if you can.
